North Crowley head coach Ray Gates is stepping down from his position to accept a role as the defensive line coach at the University of North Texas, according to sources familiar with the move. Gates leaves the program after a highly successful three-year run that established North Crowley as one of the premier programs in Texas high school football.

During his tenure, Gates guided North Crowley to a 42–2 overall record and captured the 2024 Class 6A Division I state championship. This past season, the Panthers finished 12–2 and advanced to the regional final round of the playoffs, where their postseason run ended against Allen.
North Crowley marked Gates’ first head coaching opportunity following his time as Cedar Hill’s defensive coordinator under Carlos Lynn. While at Cedar Hill, the program reached the Class 6A Division II state championship game during the 2020 season.
At North Texas, Gates will reunite with several former North Crowley players. Former starting quarterback Chris Jimerson, who led the Panthers’ 2024 state championship team, is now with the Mean Green, along with linebacker Sa’Maj Burrell and safety Julian Knox, both of whom previously played under Gates.
